We’re not getting a peek at James Gunn’s take on Superman until later this week, but at least he’s given us a taste of the musical direction he’s heading in.
The stakes couldn’t be higher for James Gunn right now. As co-CEO of DC Studios, all eyes are on him to see whether he can steer the DC Universe into a successful new era or if we’ll witness yet another reboot. He recently took to his personal Twitter to announce that a teaser trailer for his Superman film will drop this Thursday. This will mark our first glimpse into the new DCU on the live-action front, although Gunn’s animated series Creature Commandos technically kicked things off as the first project within this revamped film universe.
While we count down to Thursday, Gunn has shared a snippet of what appears to be the film’s central theme. You can find it above, accompanied by an animated loop of David Corenswet’s Superman soaring upward. The music is a pleasant throwback, resonating with a mellow and nostalgic air. It doesn’t take much to notice the nod to the iconic score from the 1978 classic directed by Richard Donner, masterfully composed by none other than John Williams.
The new theme is crafted by John Murphy, a composer known for his impressive work on projects like 28 Days Later, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and The Suicide Squad from 2021, which Gunn also helmed. This marks the third collaboration between Gunn and Murphy, following Murphy’s work on Guardians of the Galaxy 3.
Even after this week’s teaser, we’ll have to be patient. Superman is set to hit theaters on July 11 next year. But hang in there; it’ll be worth the wait!
