Update (27/11): In light of recent developments, 2K Games has expressed its support for the California mocap team’s decision following the unionization vote.
“On November 22, 2024, employees at 2K Petaluma Mocap Studio had the opportunity to cast their votes in a quiet, NLRB-organized election, determining whether to unionize under the IATSE,” the company relayed in a statement.
“The vote has been tabulated, and the preliminary outcome shows a majority in favor of joining IATSE. We respect our team’s choice and value the active participation of all involved. Our aim remains steadfast: to craft highly engaging and immersive experiences for players across the globe.”
Original story (25/11): Employees at the motion-capture studio of 2K Games in California have taken a significant leap by voting to unionize.
According to details shared on the IATSE website, the unionization vote saw 15 workers in favor and six against on Friday, November 22nd. This election was monitored by the National Labor Relations Board.
Reflecting on this decision, 2K mocap animator Matthew Peterson remarked, “It’s clear that the studio’s staff isn’t just thinking about today, but they’re also focusing on bettering the environment for their peers, future experts, and the studio’s broader community.”
“While the journey was not free of obstacles, the wave of empathy among members has truly been moving. I’m eager to engage in sincere discussions with Take-Two, hoping that this step encourages others in our field to organize, ensuring not only survival but flourishment.”
Matthew Loeb, IATSE International’s president, also commented: “The success here transcends one studio; it signals a shift in how work within the gaming industry could evolve.”
“The initiative taken by 2K MoCap employees mirrors what many in entertainment have learned: collective action is key to fostering fairness and respect in any workplace. Their boldness charts a path for others in the gaming realm to emulate. This result also highlights the power of workers utilizing their right to organize, a principle we’ll persistently strive to uphold and enhance.”
The move to unionize at 2K’s California mocap studio was initially filed in October.
