Tencent, a heavyweight in the gaming world, recently revealed a new PC title called Light of Motiram. At a glance, it appears to be a striking imitation of Sony’s acclaimed Horizon series, crafted by Guerrilla Games. We’re not just talking minor similarities here; Light of Motiram seems to echo the essence and aesthetic of Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West.
Will Sony Take Legal Action Against Tencent’s Alleged Imitation?
The recently unveiled Light of Motiram, developed by Tencent’s subsidiary, Polaris Quest, positions itself as a game set in a “mechanimal-ruled open world.” Players are tasked with surviving in a realm dominated by massive machines after the fall of human civilization.
Right after the trailer dropped, the gaming community couldn’t help but draw comparisons to the Palworld/Pokemon scenario. Palworld, a game that mimics Pokemon closely, is currently entangled in legal battles as Nintendo has charged developer Pocketpair with patent infringement.
Many gamers are buzzing with opinions—some believe Sony should hold Tencent accountable given the apparent replication of the Horizon series, while others argue that taking legal action over Light of Motiram might be a stretch.
Although various media outlets have sought comments from both Sony and Tencent, there’s been radio silence from both camps. Nevertheless, it wouldn’t be surprising if Sony decided to proceed with legal measures. Allowing Light of Motiram to escape scrutiny might risk opening the floodgates for other cherished Sony franchises to be copied.
