Square Enix seems pretty content with how things are shaping up for the third installment in the Final Fantasy 7 remake series. A senior figure recently shared this tidbit while updating folks on the status of the sequel, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
The groundwork for the final chapter of this trilogy kicked off around June 2022. They ramped up production once Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth rolled out in February 2024. Since then, Square Enix has been dropping bits of information on this big RPG project, keeping fans intrigued.
In a recent chat with Famitsu, series producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Naoki Hamaguchi opened up about where things stand. Hamaguchi mentioned he’s quite pleased with how his team’s doing, noting everything is moving along smoothly for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3. However, he was cautious about pinning down exactly when we might see it hit shelves, preferring to leave the release window open for now.
Interestingly, Kitase brought up in their conversation that the storytelling part of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 wrapped up in 2024. He highlighted how, back in November 2024, Hamaguchi disclosed they had nailed down the concept. Kitase expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, hinting that fans are likely to be thrilled as well, though he didn’t spill any more details.
The original Final Fantasy 7 Remake spent about five years in development. In contrast, they clocked roughly four years on the sequel, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, likely due in large part to reusing assets from the first remake. While it faced some delays thanks to the pesky global pandemic in 2020, the turnaround on Rebirth was quicker.
The third and final act could potentially debut around 2027. Just like its predecessors, it’s anticipated to be a timed PlayStation exclusive at first, before branching out to other platforms such as PC. Speaking of which, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth went multi-platform today, January 23, as it launched on PC, much to the delight of fans everywhere.
In summary, the path ahead looks exciting, with Square Enix keeping the Final Fantasy saga alive and well, while fans eagerly await the next installment. As always, we’ll be staying tuned to any new updates as this ambitious trilogy draws closer to completion.
