It’s no secret that handheld gaming devices are making a significant comeback, and it looks like Sony is the latest to join this trend, with rumors suggesting they are developing a true portable console that doesn’t rely on cloud gaming.
In the world of gaming, it seems that Nintendo often sets the stage. From the days of the Nintendo and Sony collaboration on a console that never quite made it to market, Sony has been trailing in the handheld space. They took a shot with the PSP, which saw some success, but its successor, the PS Vita, didn’t quite capture the audience, prompting Sony to step back from the portable console market until they introduced the PS Portal last year. However, the Portal requires a strong internet connection since it operates through cloud gaming. According to a new report from Bloomberg, Sony has ambitions for a new handheld device that would potentially allow players to enjoy their PS5 games on the go, without being tethered to the cloud.
The word on the street, per Bloomberg’s sources, is that Sony aims to broaden its influence in the portable gaming sector and challenge Nintendo’s stronghold. This move would also position Sony against a rumored Xbox handheld, which Microsoft has hinted at through Phil Spencer. Although this potential new device is exciting for many, enthusiasts might have to be patient—as the report indicates, we’re still years away from a possible launch, and it’s conceivable Sony might decide against releasing it altogether.
Interestingly, Bloomberg highlights that insiders claim the PS Portal was initially envisioned to operate much like Valve’s Steam Deck, functioning as an independent console without necessitating an internet connection. Yet, no explanations were provided as to why Sony opted for a cloud-dependent model instead.
Speculation about a dedicated Sony handheld has been swirling for some time now, particularly given the tremendous popularity of the Nintendo Switch. Should this new console indeed run PS5 games, it’s likely to be a digital-only device, reminiscent of the Steam Deck. Sony’s trend of embracing digital formats is apparent, as seen with the PS5 Pro’s lack of a disc drive. If you’re a fan of physical media, it might be time to start adjusting to this digital shift.
