Sony used to offer backwards compatibility, a feature that was both unique and greatly appreciated, but this changed with the introduction of the PS4 generation. Many have speculated that this shift was due to changes in console architectures. However, a memorable comment by former executive Jim Ryan in 2015 hinted that the company didn’t see much value in keeping the feature alive for the PS4.
When the PlayStation brand celebrated its 30th anniversary, Sony reminisced about the past, noting how backwards compatibility was a standout feature during the PS2 era. Players loved it back then, as it allowed them to enjoy their old game collections on a new console without any hassle.
In a conversation from 2015, Ryan was asked about the PS4’s inability to play older games. He responded by saying that while many players ask for backwards compatibility, very few actually make use of it. “I was at a Gran Turismo event where they displayed games from the PS1 to the PS4. Frankly, the PS1 and PS2 games looked very dated. I wondered, why would anyone want to play these?” Ryan said during an interview with TIME. His remarks were met with widespread criticism.
Despite Ryan’s comments, there’s still a strong demand for older PlayStation titles. These games remain popular, particularly as re-releases on PS Plus Premium. Unfortunately, PS3 games are still limited to streaming and are only accessible in a few select countries.
