Snap, the innovative force behind Snapchat, is making a move to put its Spectacles AR Glasses within reach of students and educators by introducing a new educational discount. This initiative slashes the high launch price of $1,200 right down the middle.
The fifth-generation Spectacles, dubbed Spectacles ’24, were launched in September 2024. These advanced glasses are mainly designed for developers and come with a tag of $100 per month on an annual commitment. They bring noteworthy upgrades compared to their predecessor from 2021. Users can enjoy a broader field-of-view, enhanced resolution, hand-tracking capabilities, and a revamped software stack. Despite these impressive enhancements, the price has posed a significant hurdle for students and teachers eager to dive into augmented reality (AR) app development.
To alleviate this financial strain, Snap is now offering a special student discount that essentially halves the overall cost of owning these AR glasses. Qualified individuals can now get them at $49.50 per month—provided they commit to a minimum of 12 months—or choose to pay a one-time fee of $594, covering the initial year, with the $49.50 monthly fee continuing thereafter for ongoing use.
