Riot Games, the company behind League of Legends, has announced a significant policy change that will impact content creators who breach its rules, even when they’re not playing its games. Starting January 3rd, Riot will crack down on creators who, for instance, resort to using offensive language toward others while broadcasting or creating content involving Riot’s games. This move is part of an update to their ‘Off-Platform Conduct’ guidelines.
In a recent blog post, Riot expressed its goal for this update: to safeguard players from detrimental behaviors that might affect their gaming experience, no matter where they encounter them.
Specifically, the policy targets content where Riot’s games serve as the backdrop. Although the company won’t actively scour social media platforms for violations, it now reserves the right to impose in-game penalties if such content is reported. To illustrate, if a content creator were to make derogatory remarks about another player during a live stream, even if these comments didn’t occur within the game’s chat system, Riot can still sanction the creator as though the offense took place in the game itself.
