I didn’t exactly have "riding a fixed-gear bike possessed by an entity named Skully" on my gaming bucket list this year. But then again, that’s the magic of events like the ID@Xbox Showcase at GDC—you’re consistently surprised by unexpected gems. Enter Wheel World, a game that seamlessly combines open-world exploration, treasure hunting, and pulse-pounding bike races. This unique blend has me eagerly anticipating its arrival on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC with Xbox Play Anywhere support later this year.
In Wheel World, you become Kat, a cyclist destined to save a quirky realm teeming with rival riders, scattered spare parts, and, humorously enough, portal potties that double as fast-travel spots. What drew me in, aside from the gameplay itself, was the game’s lightheartedness. I mean, a bike possessed by a spirit guide responsible for ferrying souls to and from the Moon? That’s wonderfully absurd. Your main mission revolves around assisting Skully in gathering these spirits, all while piecing together the ultimate bicycle.
Cruising through Wheel World, the thrill of scavenging for parts is palpable. Hidden all over, these elusive treasures allow you to swap everything from the frame to the wheels on your bike, influencing stats like speed and handling. Some components even boast a ‘Legendary’ status, offering unique abilities such as a boost meter expansion for races.
The allure doesn’t stop there. Reputation is another currency in this world, unlocking new areas. Earn reputation by outpacing others or by challenging biker gangs to, you guessed it, race. Riding through Wheel World is an absolute blast!
Every race I entered—whether it was a duel or a group showdown—ended up being exhilarating and mildly challenging, all set to an energetic soundtrack by Italians Do It Better. Mastering maneuvers like drafting (riding behind another to decrease wind drag) and tactically using boosts were crucial to my victories. Success on the racetrack earned me coupons for in-game bike shops, opening up even more customization options.
The bike physics really stood out. They were intuitive and polished, whether I was navigating tight turns, powering up steep inclines, or coasting downhill. This mattered a lot, given the game’s reliance on realistic handling. The cel-shaded scenery was a treat to cycle through, akin to the likes of Sable or Dungeons of Hinterberg.
Messhof, the indie developers behind this project, truly capture the essence of the cycling lifestyle in Wheel World. From exhilarating races to leisurely rides through picturesque hills, it encapsulates the thrill and liberation that come with biking. Keep an eye out for Wheel World as it hits Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, complete with Xbox Play Anywhere support, later this year.
