The longer I play games, the more instinctive certain things become. It’s funny how, after only about ten minutes, I often know if I’m going to enjoy a game. It’s not always about my preferences either. I’ve tried games outside my usual genre and ended up hooked; it’s more like a gut reaction. And usually, I’m spot on. This is why I believe you don’t need to experience every minute of a game to give a fair review — just approach it with an open mind. If you’re struggling in the first hour, chances are things won’t improve much further in. I’m bringing this up because I’ve been playing Cryptical Path on PC, and by the end of the tutorial, I was already head over heels. I’ll explain why, but this could easily be one of my favorite games of 2025, even though it’s only January.
In Cryptical Path, you assume the role of The Architect, summoned to the Hexium, a prison under your control that’s hit by chaos. A doppelganger lurks, claiming to rule this domain and showing disdain for your presence. To complicate matters, it’s unleashed all the prisoners and warped them. To prevent total chaos, you’ll need to harness all your powers, especially since there’s a familiar figure with eerily similar abilities on the loose.
Cryptical Path is a roguelite, but it’s an inventive one. Instead of following a predefined map, you’re tasked with creating it yourself. The Architect crafts The Hexium, controlling its contents. Each room, with its creatures, is placed by you. The catch is that the presence of the Doppelganger means you never know what surprises await in each room. You wield significant power but not complete control, which is unsettling on your own turf.
Challenges abound in Cryptical Path. Constructing rooms is essential but also pricey. Your abilities can only stretch so far before negative effects surface. This is expressed through control points — each room costs some to build. Exhaust your points and you’ll attract a curse. Initially trivial, these curses can quickly become problematic if neglected. Therefore, a strategic approach is recommended.
At its core, Cryptical Path might seem like just another platform-based roguelite. However, it stands out. The gameplay mechanics are unique enough to captivate players, yet it’s the game’s unmistakable style that truly shines. The passion and dedication poured into this project are evident, sparking an immediate connection.
Cryptical Path feels like stepping into a 90s cartoon, in the best possible way. Think of it as if Adult Swim turned an animated series into a game. It’s the perfect blend of edgy and mature to engage older players while also captivating the teenage crowd. If this were an actual TV show, I’d definitely binge-watch it in a heartbeat. It’s packed with well-crafted writing, intriguing characters, and it’s downright entertaining.
One important note about Cryptical Path is the controls. Many games suggest using a controller for PC play, and here, it’s genuinely advisable. While it’s possible to play with a mouse and keyboard, using a controller makes a world of difference in terms of precision. It’s not mandatory, just a strong recommendation for the best experience. This isn’t a critique against the game but worth mentioning for those curious.
Finding something to criticize in Cryptical Path is surprisingly difficult. If you love platformers or roguelites, this is a game you simply need to try. Even if you don’t expect groundbreaking mechanics, you’ll experience a masterclass in game craftsmanship here.
And there it is. There’s not much more to say because it’s all good. Cryptical Path absolutely deserves a console release soon. It’s sure to be a hit with PS4, Xbox, and Switch fans. The Architect is now one of my favorite characters, and I hope this game marks the start of a series we’ll enjoy for years to come. Truly remarkable work all around!

Cryptical Path is a must-try for fans of roguelite and platform games. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt so connected to game characters, eagerly anticipating more. This is a title I’ll keep returning to and wholeheartedly recommend. Absolutely superb!
