Ubisoft, the renowned French publisher, seems to be cooking up something intriguing—a new battle royale game set to compete directly with Apex Legends.
According to Insider Gaming, this new project, currently going by the codename Scout, shares so much in common with the popular Apex Legends from Respawn and EA that its art was once used as a thumbnail for Ubisoft’s work. Rumors suggest that the upcoming game features characters strikingly similar to those in Apex, indicating how closely Ubisoft is aligning its new venture with the established hit. This project has been simmering on Ubisoft’s back burner for quite some time.
It appears Ubisoft sees an opportunity to capture some of Apex Legends’ audience, especially given that Apex Legends is experiencing a dip in financial performance, as acknowledged by Electronic Arts itself.
A source close to the situation remarked, “The idea seems to be that there’s potential to attract players leaving Apex, with Ubisoft executives betting on a slot in the market for another hero-based battle royale.”
This won’t be Ubisoft’s first attempt to break into the free-to-play battle royale space. Back in 2020, they launched Hyperscape, although it lasted only 18 months before shutting down. This latest move comes closely after Ubisoft decided to pull the plug on another free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, by the end of 2024.
Meanwhile, Apex Legends fans might find solace in knowing that a 2.0 version is slated for release sometime after April 2026. Ubisoft’s timing might just add heat to the already competitive arena of battle royales.
