Indie publisher Reforged Studios has taken another significant stride this year by acquiring Yellow Lab Games, marking its third development purchase in 2023. While the financial details remain under wraps, it has been stated that the South African developer will continue to operate independently, according to reports from GI.biz. Yellow Lab is currently working on Metavoidal, a roguelite RPG, which is anticipated to make its debut on Steam in the first quarter of 2025.
This acquisition builds on Reforged’s recent expansions, following their purchase of Ground Shatter and Extra Mile Studios back in August.
Reflecting on the acquisition, Reforged’s CEO and founder, Peter Van Der Watt, remarked, “Growing up in South Africa, I’ve always recognized the immense talent in the game development community here. Yellow Lab Games caught my attention some time ago, particularly with the enthusiastic reception of Metavoidal, their initial venture into PC and console gaming.”
Peter continued, “Since moving to Scotland to launch my first game studio in 2011, I’ve been a strong advocate for South African game development globally. Today, the entire board of Reforged shares this passion for the region’s potential. When the chance arose to welcome David Hecker and his team into our family, we jumped at it. We’re thrilled to incorporate South Africa’s premier gaming talent into Reforged and see this as the start of a larger investment in Africa’s growing gaming industry.”
