Rec Room has always been a hub for thrilling adventures you can dive into with both friends and folks you meet along the way. This popular social VR platform has just rolled out ‘Run the Block’, a newcomer that’s drawing plenty of inspiration from the much-loved Jet Set Radio, a classic from the Dreamcast days back in 2000.
The buzz about ‘Run the Block’ started the moment it was unleashed on December 11th, and it has already pulled in a staggering crowd of over a million players. Channeling the energy of Jet Set Radio, this free mini-game sees you facing off against up to nine other players. Your mission? Carve your path through a sprawling cityscape with your skills in racing, parkour, and creativity.
Even though you won’t find the iconic rollerblades of Jet Set Radio here, there’s plenty of action to go around. You’ll still be sprinting, leaping, and grinding along the immense lines scribbled across the map, all while leaving your mark with graffiti in the vibrant urban environment.
If we look back over the past year, Rec Room hasn’t been as prolific in churning out first-party games compared to earlier years. Their latest big hit was actually the charming pet farming sim, ‘My Little Monster’. Beyond new games, Rec Room has been all about enriching its platform. They’ve introduced themed content, like the avatar packs from ‘Monster High’ and elements from Bungie’s Destiny, their blockbuster shooter.
This past year, a lot of effort has gone into enhancing their creator suite. Now users can dream up their own intricate worlds and even develop assets to sell within Rec Room’s vibrant creator economy. On top of that, full-body avatars made their debut earlier in the year, giving players more ways to express themselves.
The cherry on top? Rec Room expanded its playground to the Nintendo Switch in November, adding to its already impressive list of compatible devices. You can jump into Rec Room fun whether you’re using PC VR, any of the Quest headsets, the original PSVR, as well as iOS, Android, Pico, Xbox, and PlayStation.
