Disney’s Strange World stands out as a remarkably underrated gem. This adventurous flick artfully intertwines a narrative rich with Disney’s signature theme of generational trauma, as it delves into the lives of the Clade family across three generations. Each member wrestles with their own perception of what their family should represent. As the grandfather, father, and son each face their personal convictions, the movie unfolds with some of the most breathtaking animation Disney has ever crafted, despite it not getting the theater presence it deserved.
Taking cues from iconic adventure sagas like Indiana Jones, Strange World also integrates strong environmental messages set against a dazzling, otherworldly backdrop. The titular world is a spectacle of vibrant, alien landscapes filled with lively inhabitants and captivating creatures that truly earn the description "strange." Despite its fantastical setting, the core conflicts remain deeply human. The Clade family grapples with understanding one another, and it’s in the face of danger and the unknown that they begin to realize what’s been obvious all along.
Unfortunately, Disney’s lackluster marketing efforts led this film to become an unexpected box office flop. However, for those with a Disney+ subscription, the movie is available for streaming, and it’s an absolute must-watch. It truly deserved a better fate in the cinematic world.
