I’ve had the chance to sit down with Alex Kanaris-Sotiriou, one of the co-founders of Polygon Treehouse, to discuss their upcoming game, Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island. We’re working on a full review, but here’s a sneak peek into our conversation!
PS4Blog: Good morning, Alex! It’s great to have you back with us. How’s everything been for you these past few years?
Alex: Thanks for the warm welcome! It’s been quite the whirlwind since we released our last indie title, Röki. I’ve been delving into folklore and mythology from a fresh angle with Mythwrecked. This time, instead of focusing on Scandinavian lore, we’re bringing the Greek gods to life as if they were mingling in the modern world. It’s been a fascinating journey!
PS4Blog: Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island is set to hit the Nintendo Switch on December 5th. What should players anticipate from this adventure?
Alex: We like to call Mythwrecked an ‘explore-o-story’ game. Players step into the shoes of Alex, a backpacker who’s trying to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. But their peaceful getaway is upended by a mysterious storm that strands them on what turns out to be an ancient, forgotten island. Throughout the journey, players will connect with iconic Greek gods, help restore their memories, and work toward finding a path back home.
PS4Blog: When did you begin developing this project, and how has it transformed from concept to what players will soon experience?
Alex: The initial brainstorming and concepts began around three years ago. From the start, we had a pretty solid vision, especially with mechanics like treasure hunting using radar and the memorable flashbacks. One of the major developments, though, was perfecting the ‘Story Sandbox.’ It took several iterations, but we finally created dynamic conversations with the gods that truly put players in the heart of a living story, which I’m really proud of.
PS4Blog: Röki saw a physical release, which was exciting. Is something similar planned for Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island?
Alex: I absolutely loved seeing Röki get a physical release, and it’s something I hope we can do with Mythwrecked in the future. Right now, I don’t have any news to share on that front, but fingers crossed!
PS4Blog: Before we wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share?
Alex: Just a huge thank you to everyone reading! If you’re into cozy games, mythology, or enjoy a good adventure with a dash of mystery, do give Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island a try. We believe it’s an indie game adventure you won’t want to miss!
