As the PlayStation 5 takes over as the main console for PlayStation enthusiasts, the era of PS4 support is gradually fading. Among the affected titles is a widely adored MMORPG, which will soon cut ties with its older version but not without offering players a seamless upgrade to the current generation at no extra cost.
Pearl Abyss recently shared that they’re planning to discontinue Black Desert Online on both the PS4 and Xbox One. Fans of the MMORPG have just a few months left to enjoy the game on these platforms before it fully transitions to the latest consoles. Mark your calendars for June 26, when the developer will officially close the game on the PS4 and Xbox One during their maintenance window. The silver lining? You can upgrade to the latest version without leaving a dent in your wallet, and all your account details and purchases will make the leap with you.
“Your journey isn’t ending; it’s evolving,” assures Brian Choi, the Black Desert Console Live Service Manager, regarding the migration from PS4 to PS5. “Your game data is safely anchored, and once you’re ready to make the switch to the PlayStation 5 or the Xbox Series, your Black Desert entitlements and account information will be eagerly waiting. We realize that this announcement might be a letdown for some. Yet, our ongoing updates have consistently aimed to enhance the adventurers’ experience.”
Choi elaborates further, “Despite our relentless efforts to refine and refresh content for older consoles, we’ve hit the limits of their hardware. This makes it increasingly tough to roll out the latest updates smoothly. Thus, after much reflection, we’ve resolved to channel our resources into the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series platforms to ensure a richer and more stable gaming experience.”
When Black Desert Online made its American debut back in 2016, the reception was a mixed bag. Metacritic, which aggregates reviews, reflects an average critic score of 73 from 35 reviews. Come 2019, the game expanded its horizons, launching on both the PS4 and Xbox One.
