In a recent chat, Hideaki Nishino, PlayStation’s head honcho, shared some exciting updates about the PS Portal. He called its sales a massive win for Sony and hinted that there’s more in store for the handheld device as Sony explores fresh ways to deliver PlayStation games to fans. Speaking with the BBC, Nishino revealed that the addition of direct cloud streaming on the PS Portal is only the beginning of what’s to come.
The surprising success of the PS Portal seems to have kickstarted Sony’s interest in developing a new handheld device. When the BBC attempted to get additional information out of Nishino and Co-CEO Hermen Hulst, the two deftly sidestepped the questions. However, Nishino did mention how the way players engage with games is evolving. This shift was a driving force behind the launch and success of the PS Portal.
Nishino elaborated, saying, “We’ve just rolled out a beta that enables Cloud streaming directly to the device.” This is part of their broader strategy to explore myriad ways gamers can access their titles.
Rumor has it that after stepping away from portable gaming for a while, Sony has been quietly experimenting with a new handheld console. Early prototype versions might already exist, fueled by the PS Portal’s popularity. With Microsoft’s clear intent to develop an Xbox handheld, Sony is likely determined not to lag in the upcoming PS6 era.
