The Unova Tour event in Pokémon Go just got even more exciting, bringing fans a fresh headline attraction.
In an announcement that has thrilled Trainers everywhere, Pokémon Go is introducing White Kyurem and Black Kyurem to the game for the very first time. These iconic box mascots from Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 will become available as part of a special celebration of the fifth generation of Pokémon. You can expect to see these Ice/Dragon legends at exclusive in-person events happening in Los Angeles and New Taipei City from February 21st to 23rd. If you can’t make it to those events, don’t worry – there will be a global launch on March 1st and 2nd.
To catch these formidable Pokémon, Trainers will have to engage in challenging raid battles, the second toughest available. Successfully defeating Black or White Kyurem will earn you the coveted “Volt Fusion Energy” or “Blaze Fusion Energy,” needed to unlock Black Kyurem and White Kyurem, respectively. This process mirrors the fusion mechanic we saw last summer for creating Dusk Mane Necrozma and Dawn Wings Necrozma at the Pokémon Go Fest. For a fusion, you’ll need a Kyurem, paired with either Zekrom or Reshiram, with Kyurem setting the tone for stats and any shiny features. If your Kyurem knows the move Glaciate, fusing with Zekrom will yield Freeze Shock for your Black Kyurem, while fusing with Reshiram will bestow Ice Burn upon White Kyurem. We’ve reached out to Niantic for confirmation on whether Kyurem captured during the event will come with Glaciate to ease the fusion process. Note that while fusion energy will be initially available at these live events, those outside the area can participate in up to five daily remote raids over the weekend, although only local participants will receive the energy.
Additionally, these legendary Pokémon may feature special thematic backgrounds when captured, reminiscent of Pokémon Black and White. Reshiram will sport a Pokémon Black theme, while Zekrom will take on a Pokémon White aesthetic. Kyurem’s background will vary between these two, and if you happen to fuse Pokémon with distinct backgrounds—like pairing a Zekrom with a Kyurem rocking a Black theme—you’ll discover a unique third background, adding a novel touch to your collection.
This Unova Tour is shaping up to be an event you won’t want to miss, bringing exciting challenges and unique rewards for Pokémon Go players around the world.
