Sony Interactive Entertainment is navigating an intriguing phase with its push into multiplayer live-service games. The PS5 celebrated a big victory with Helldivers 2, though that success was somewhat overshadowed by the stumble of Concord. Despite the setbacks, Sony isn’t throwing in the towel. They’re forging ahead with more titles in the live-service arena, as a recent job listing suggests.
A recent job posting from PlayStation’s new Los Angeles studio focuses on finding a Game Systems Designer to bring “the next groundbreaking AAA original IP” to life, as highlighted by Tech4Gamers. While the concept of developing a new AAA title isn’t brand new for this studio, this particular listing offers a few hints about what kind of game they’re crafting.
Reading through the qualifications, there’s the usual array of expected criteria for such a role. However, one detail stands out, offering a glimpse into the game’s potential direction.
The posting specifies a requirement for “experience with and knowledge of cooperative multiplayer design principles and ideals.”
This suggests that the new studio is crafting a cooperative multiplayer game, one that’s destined to join the ranks of PlayStation’s major franchises. Other than these teasers, details about the project remain under wraps.
Back in January, another job ad brought this new PlayStation studio to light, hinting that former Call of Duty developer Jason Blundell might be at the helm. Blundell stepped into this role after Deviation Games folded in 2023, and former team members have confirmed they continued working with PlayStation after Deviation’s closure under his guidance.
Recently, reports surfaced about the rocky launch of Concord pushing Sony to rethink its live-service game strategy. Industry insider Jeff Grubb shared that Sony is re-evaluating its live-service roadmap and has already pulled the plug on several projects, including a God of War multiplayer game by Bluepoint Games.
