It looks like we’re facing yet another game that might never see the light of day—PlatinumGames’ Project G.G. If you’re scratching your head trying to recall what Project G.G. is, you’re not alone. Announced back in 2020, the game bore a resemblance to Ultra Man but was shrouded in mystery, with little information released about it. Fast forward to the end of 2023, and Hideki Kamiya, the director and co-founder of PlatinumGames, has left the company. With his departure, doubts about the game’s future have only intensified, and it now seems likely that Project G.G. is heading towards cancellation.
If you’re wondering where to find this game on PlatinumGames’ site, you’re out of luck. Their current game list includes familiar names like the Bayonetta series, Nier: Automata, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and the recently announced Ninja Gaiden 4. But, getting a peek at a snapshot through the Wayback Machine reveals something interesting: the list used to feature 22 games. This includes licensed fandom favorites such as Transformers: Devastation, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, and The Legend of Korra. There were also original creations like Madworld and the ill-fated Babylon’s Fall. Surprisingly, most of these games still have dedicated pages, even if they’re absent from the main list.
However, Project G.G. is a different story. Not only is it missing from PlatinumGames’ current roster, but its individual page has vanished too. Attempting to visit it just bounces you back to the main PlatinumGames site, which is a pretty solid sign that the project has been shelved.
This conclusion doesn’t come out of the blue, especially considering that Kamiya has been away from the studio for over a year. Lately, it seems like there’s been a noticeable shuffle in the company, with several key figures heading for the exit. Thankfully, the new Ninja Gaiden game hints that PlatinumGames hasn’t completely hit pause yet, and there’s hope for some fresh adventures on the horizon.
