Stress Level Zero has seen significant success with their physics-driven sandbox hit BONELAB (2022) on Quest, even though they haven’t yet released the acclaimed BONEWORKS (2019) on Meta’s newest standalone devices. That’s set to change soon.
For those unfamiliar, Boneworks is a narrative-driven VR action-adventure game on PC that dives deep into experimental physics mechanics. It’s an intense experience, pushing players to navigate complex environments, engage in combat heavy on physics interactions, and solve puzzles with inventive approaches.
Brandon Laatsch, who co-founded the studio, recently shared some exciting goals for 2025 on a post on X (formerly Twitter). He mentioned not only upcoming updates to their Marrow Engine physics framework but also plans to bring Boneworks to Quest 3 and the upcoming Quest 3S.
You can catch a glimpse of Boneworks running on Quest 3 below:
> ‘25 goals: Release Patch 7, 8, 9 for Bonelab with Marrow 2, 2.1, 2.2. Bring Boneworks to Quest 3 in parallel on Marrow 2. Pre-production for the next game. By x-linking Marrow, we’re aiming for compatibility. Boneworks is the nearest kin but is still tricky. Godspeed, SLZ! [Tweet by Brandon J Laatsch, January 1, 2025]
Laatsch emphasizes that the development of Marrow’s 2.0 release and Boneworks for Quest 3 are proceeding alongside their next game’s pre-production.
Interestingly enough, those using Quest devices can technically experience Boneworks on Quest 2 and later through a widely appreciated community mod called ‘Labworks’.
Laatsch was keen to highlight that Labworks will remain available. This mod, which took independent developer ‘volx64’ two years to port, will coexist with the Quest 3 version. Laatsch noted that the Marrow Engine will significantly enhance Boneworks, offering more than a straightforward port.
As of now, there’s no confirmed release date, but we’re on the lookout for updates on Laatsch’s X feed and the studio’s YouTube adventures.
