At today’s Triple-i Initiative indie showcase, Funselektor, the creative minds behind Absolute Drift and Art of Rally, teamed up with Strelka Games to reveal the first gameplay trailer for their new offroading adventure, Over the Hill.
Initially announced back in January, this game leverages Funselektor’s signature sleek and minimalist art style, which has characterized their previous work, and infuses it with gameplay reminiscent of SnowRunner—minus the hassle of dealing with vehicle trailers. The game revels in playing around with dynamic in-game trailers, rather than the literal kind.
In case you missed it, the new trailer highlights all the muddy antics and winch-pulling adventures we’ve come to expect from the genre. Impressively, this game has already garnered over 200,000 wishlists on Steam—even without a set release date. Over the Hill caters to those who enjoy offroading escapades without the hefty costs that come with maintaining a Land Rover prone to issues.
Players are invited to team up with up to three friends in classic off-road vehicles dating from the 1960s to the 1980s era, a nod to Funselektor’s fondness for retro motoring aesthetics. This time, however, expect to navigate through diverse weather conditions and seasonal landscapes.
The developers have opted for a simplified user interface that includes a mini-map that might remind some of the Ordnance Survey maps your dad would awkwardly unfold during a countryside road trip. We also got a glimpse of the winch mechanics, which should be familiar to fans of SnowRunner—using the circular dot system to pinpoint your next move.
On top of that, there’s a hint of vehicle customization to ensure your ride is fully prepped for any muddy challenges, and a photo mode to capture those epic mountain-top moments or the not-so-graceful tumbles down a hillside. Both are surely worth documenting.
