Nintendo recently announced that its Nintendo Switch Online service has surpassed 34 million subscribers. This data was accurate as of September 30, 2024.
This update was shared during a presentation by Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, where he discussed the company’s financial results for the second quarter and outlined their corporate management policies. The briefing delved into changes in the company’s video game platform business.
Interestingly, this figure marks a decrease from the 36 million subscribers reported in September 2022. According to Nintendo, this drop was due to the lack of new releases focusing on online play over the past year. Despite this, there has been a “steady increase” in subscriptions to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack since its 2021 launch.
To enhance the appeal of Nintendo Switch Online, the company recently introduced Nintendo Music. This music streaming service is exclusive to subscribers and can be accessed via a smartphone app.
During the briefing, a shareholder questioned whether Nintendo Music might eventually be available to non-subscribers. Furukawa had this to say:
“The core aim of Nintendo Switch Online is to enrich the Nintendo Switch experience, and that goal remains consistent.”
“Nintendo Music is tailored for Nintendo Switch Online members, allowing them to enjoy Nintendo game music on their smart devices. Game music holds a significant place in our content library, and we see the service as part of our strategy to broaden access to Nintendo’s intellectual property. We introduced Nintendo Music to offer game music to our users in a uniquely Nintendo way.”
“We hope that as people listen to Nintendo Music and reminisce about playing our games, they’ll be inspired to revisit those games.”
“Ultimately, we aim for Nintendo Music to become another compelling reason for individuals to continue their Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions.”
