Monster Hunter Wilds is setting up to be the most ambitious entry in the franchise yet. Even though there aren’t any new weapon classes this time around, the developers have shed light on their reasoning. Fans of the series can expect to see the familiar 14 weapon types from World and Rise return, albeit with some adjustments and enhancements. The team behind the game believes this approach actually benefits the overall experience.
Although the weapon roster seems unchanged at first glance, Monster Hunter Wilds introduces significant updates, specifically to bowguns and bows. These modifications, coupled with general gameplay refinements, have been prioritized over the inclusion of a completely new weapon class. Thanks to insights from the developers, we now understand why they chose this path rather than expanding the weapon variety further.
Director Yuya Tokuda explained in an interview with PCGamesN the challenge of introducing a 15th weapon without it becoming too similar to existing classes. There’s already a wide range of styles within the established 14, with each offering unique gameplay experiences—be it the bow’s adaptability, the swift dual blades, or the risky-but-rewarding great sword. It seems like the player base already has their needs met, enjoying a harmonious balance that the developers are keen to maintain.
By sticking with the existing weapon lineup, the development team can focus on refinement and perfecting the established mechanics. Tokuda mentioned that, while the idea of introducing new weapons was considered, the decision ultimately leaned towards enhancing what was already there. Capcom’s goal is to blend freshness with familiarity in Monster Hunter Wilds, ensuring each weapon feels just right within the game’s ecosystem.
It appears this strategy has been well-received. As of January, Monster Hunter Wilds has topped Steam’s wishlist charts, surpassing even highly anticipated games like Hollow Knight: Silksong. When the game launches on February 28, players will get to see firsthand how these improvements to existing weapons enrich the Monster Hunter experience.
With stunning, dynamic environments and thrilling hunts on the horizon, players will step into their roles as Hunters, taking on formidable monsters and crafting powerful new gear. The interwoven tales of humans and monsters waiting in Hunter Wilds promise an unforgettable adventure, all set in a world beautifully tailored by the game’s creators.
