After catching “A Minecraft Movie” on the big screen, I opted to hang around just in case a post-credits scene popped up. With Jared Hess at the helm, wielding his directorial magic alongside the creative minds behind “Napoleon Dynamite,” there was always the chance of catching a sneak peek of another Minecraft realm like The End. Plus, who wouldn’t be intrigued by the prospect of a Marvel-style teaser hinting at a Minecraft Cinematic Universe?
Most of the crowd made a beeline for the exit as soon as the credits rolled, but those of us who lingered were rewarded with a twist that was definitely worth the wait.
So, does “A Minecraft Movie” treat us to a mid-credits gem? Yes, indeed! Amidst the credits, there’s a cameo that’s easy to miss if you make a swift exit. We find Marlene, the vice principal from Chuglas, portrayed by the delightful Jennifer Coolidge, whipping up breakfast for her new villager love interest. Unexpectedly, her ex, Mr. Gunchie, played by Hiram Garcia, swings by to win her back. Now, here’s the kicker: the villager, typically communicating in peculiar gurgles, bursts into a heartfelt monologue in Matt Berry’s rich voice, professing how love has given him words. Meanwhile, Marlene has adopted the villager’s speech pattern. If that surprise isn’t enough, stick around because there’s more waiting once the credits fully wrap up.
And, about that post-credits scene—it’s indeed tucked away at the end, just as the theater lights begin to flicker on. We find Steve, played by Jack Black, returning from his escapades in Minecraft’s Overworld to discover that his abandoned house has found a new owner. A mysterious red-haired woman in a green shirt welcomes him at the door, though she remains a mystery as her face stays hidden. Steve gets right to the point, inquiring about an old chest left in the attic. With a warm smile, she invites him in and reveals her name: Alex.
For those uninitiated, Alex came after Steve as a default Minecraft player skin and has since become a prominent avatar for players worldwide. While the movie showed Steve thriving in the Overworld, Alex has been inhabiting the real world, hinting at her possible involvement should a sequel unfold.
Although “A Minecraft Movie” ties up its plot neatly, this post-credits excerpt tantalizes with the promise of new adventures. Whether we’ll see a revisit to the Nether or unveil The End remains a mystery, but you can bet Alex—and that intriguing old chest—hold a key part in whatever comes next.
