During the Connect event this past September, Meta revealed exciting news about a collaboration with Microsoft designed to allow Windows 11 PCs to wirelessly sync with Quest headsets. Fast forward to now, and both companies have announced that users will get a sneak peek at this feature come December.
The upcoming feature will enable Quest 3 and Quest 3S users to connect to their Windows 11 PCs, unlocking a multi-monitor work setup. This development will feel quite familiar to Vision Pro and Mac users, who have enjoyed a similar connection feature through Mac Virtual Display since its debut in February 2024.
Microsoft plans to roll out this feature as a public preview in December, aiming to attract users eager to enhance their productivity.
“Integrating Windows into mixed reality brings all that Windows 11 offers into the realm of mixed reality headsets, starting with Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S,” explained Melissa Grant, Microsoft’s Senior Director of Product Marketing for Microsoft 365, in a blog post. She highlighted the seamless nature of accessing your local Windows PC or Windows 365 Cloud PC via a Quest headset, transforming it into a private, high-quality, multi-monitor workstation within seconds.
At the feature’s unveiling during Connect in September, Meta hinted at a new, intuitive way to connect to PCs. Just glance at your keyboard, and you’ll intuitively access your computer, moving windows across several virtual monitors. This is a significant leap from the Remote Desktop experience you’d typically get when using Meta’s own Air Link.
Though Quest has predominantly established itself as the leading standalone VR gaming console, Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, envisions the deeper Windows integration as a crucial step forward for Quest.
“This is the direction we’re heading in to create a comprehensive computing platform,” Zuckerberg stated. “It’s not just about games, although Quest excels in that area. You’re also going to be able to use it for apps, video streaming, and numerous other tasks you would typically perform on a general-purpose computer. Quest truly offers the whole package.”
Stay tuned for further updates, as we’ll report more on release dates as information becomes available.
