It’s no secret that Sony’s attempts to expand the Spider-Man universe without actually including Spider-Man have been less than stellar. However, the director of “Kraven the Hunter” believes you might want to give his film a chance.
Let’s talk Venom, Morbius, and Madame Web. What do they share? They’re all tied to the Spider-Man universe, they’re all produced by Sony, and, well, they’re a bit of a letdown. Sure, Venom has its quirky charm, but let’s be real. Fans aren’t exactly singing praises. J.C. Chandor, the director of the upcoming “Kraven the Hunter,” is fully aware of the lukewarm reception these films have received. In a chat with ComicBook, he readily acknowledged the mixed bag that is the Sony Spider-Man universe but still encouraged fans to check out his latest project.
Speaking candidly, Chandor said, “I don’t want to get bogged down in the details, but as a filmmaker, my main goal, especially in recent years with fans so invested in this world, has been to acknowledge that some decisions haven’t gone over well with the audience.” He added, “Despite that, some films have seen tremendous success. It’s been a mixed success rate. People have to give us a chance and come out to support this film, and try to reset from past experiences. Give our film a chance.”
This seems a bit optimistic when considering that out of the five live-action films in this universe, only the Venom series has actually resonated with audiences. Those are the ones that have truly scored, thanks to Venom’s iconic status, unlike Morbius and Madame Web.
Chandor is confident, though, saying, “I believe fans will notice we’ve given them a pretty enjoyable story. Once the movie wraps up, there’s room for more to happen. My intention was to focus on making a great standalone story. Then we can explore more fun opportunities.”
As for what those opportunities might be, it’s anyone’s guess. A lot hinges on how well the film performs, and we’ll just have to wait and see.
“Kraven the Hunter” is set to hit theaters in just a couple of weeks on December 13. It will be intriguing to witness whether it manages to change the course for Sony’s Spider-Verse films.
