If you’ve been longing to immerse yourself in the Game of Thrones universe, Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is just around the corner. This free-to-play action-adventure RPG is set to launch soon on both PC and mobile, promising an exhilarating adventure.
The game unfolds an original narrative set in the iconic land of Westeros, specifically during the latter half of Season 4 of the show. You’ll step into the shoes of a new character, the heir to House Tyre, a minor house in the North caught in the intricate web of Westeros’s political intrigue.
Throughout your journey, prepare to meet familiar faces like Jon Snow, Samwell Tarly, Lord Varys, and Cersei Lannister. The game offers the unique chance to witness events that were never seen onscreen, such as the shifting loyalties of House Bolton. As you traverse the continent, you’ll visit legendary locations like King’s Landing, Castle Black, and Highgarden, all of which have been meticulously re-created to match their dramatic series counterparts.
The game’s open-world setup lets you explore these famous locales at your own pace, venturing beyond the Wall into uncharted territories and hidden towns waiting to be discovered. Each town presents a set of distinct quests and challenges that weave into the deep lore of the Game of Thrones world.
In addition to the main storyline, there are numerous side quests that will keep you engaged. Players can pursue optional Faction and Estate tasks to earn valuable rewards like money, gear, and crafting materials. This system allows you to tailor your character and equipment to suit your unique playstyle.
Traveling through Westeros isn’t without its hazards — and they’re not all just political. The land is fraught with desperate individuals ready to do whatever it takes to survive, making action RPG combat a central element of gameplay.
Your approach to combat will depend on your chosen character class. You’ve got three to choose from: Knight, Sellsword, or Assassin. The Knight represents the typical Westerosi knight, wielding a longsword with precision. The Sellsword is inspired by the raw power of Wildlings and Dothraki, while the Assassin, drawing inspiration from the Faceless Men and Dorne, brings swift, agile attacks with dual daggers.
Each class offers its own specialized gear, traits, and skills, leaving you the freedom to develop your character as you see fit. The talent system features Attack, Defense, and Support trees, with various nodes offering fixed benefits. You can choose to focus on one area or spread your skills to become well-rounded. Additionally, each class can unlock its own distinct skills to enhance your strategic options in battle.
When it comes to combat, you’ll need to quickly read enemy patterns and react accordingly. Players can guard and parry, but be on the lookout for unblockable attacks that require swift dodging. Staying alert and striking at the right moment are key to winning battles.
Aside from the single-player storyline, there’s a multiplayer feature called Altar of Memories. Here, you and other players can band together to confront legendary creatures like massive ice spiders, unicorns from Skagos, majestic griffins, and grotesque cockatrices.
The game is set to debut in Early Access on March 26. Interested players can pre-register for Game of Thrones: Kingsroad on its official site, with options for both PC via Steam and Windows Launcher and mobile devices. Don’t forget to wishlist it on Steam! The full release is scheduled for 2025, complete with cross-play and cross-progression across all platforms.
