Junk Store, a plugin designed to let you run third-party game stores like Epic Games and GOG directly from Steam Deck’s Gaming Mode, has just landed in the Steam Store. Kudos to GamingOnLinux for spotting it first! This new tool shares similarities with Decky Loader, which is an open-source plugin launcher for the Steam Deck that allows developers to enhance the handheld console with additional features. However, the creators of Junk Store, SDK Innovation, are aiming to have it recognized as an official Steam Deck app, eliminating the need for users to tinker with the system themselves.
The Steam listing highlights, “Junk Store is now on Steam. We’ve completely reworked it to function independently from Decky Loader, allowing you to install your favorite games from the Epic Games Store and GOG Store directly in game mode.”
On Reddit’s r/JunkStore, the developers revealed that they set up the Steam Store page to measure interest through the number of users clicking ‘Add to Wishlist.’ But it’s not guaranteed that Junk Store will secure a spot in the Steam library just yet, as “Valve still needs to review the software for its final release.” Despite this, the developers see the page’s approval as Valve giving a “quiet nod of approval.”
It’s worth noting, though, that the Junk Store won’t be a free, open-source release on Steam. Since the developers built the app from scratch, ensuring it works flawlessly with SteamOS and dropping the reliance on Decky Loader features, it required a substantial effort. They haven’t decided on pricing yet, as they’re still evaluating the cost and community interest. Plus, with just two developers on the team, there isn’t a slated launch window just yet.
Despite these uncertainties, the developers recognize their pioneering role as the first Steam Deck plugin entering the app store. They’re optimistic that Junk Store could set an example, contributing positively to the gaming experience for players, developers, and the entire Steam community.
For those who enjoy tinkering and customizing their Steam Deck, the Steam version of Junk Store might not be necessary since you can run it via Decky Loader for free. However, for the average gamer who simply wants to dive into their purchased games without hassle, Junk Store offers a convenient way to access titles from multiple platforms seamlessly.
