Unlike its predecessor, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, the much-anticipated Rebirth won’t feature any DLC, but there’s a solid reason behind this decision.
After Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth hit the shelves, many fans were eager to know if any downloadable content (DLC) would follow, given that Remake received some while fans awaited its sequel. Put your curiosity to rest, as director Naoki Hamaguchi addressed this in a recent chat with the Daily Star. Hamaguchi confirmed that no DLC was in the works, but he explained the rationale. “We definitely hear the desire from fans, those voices clamoring for that content,” Hamaguchi acknowledged. “I completely understand, but from where I stand, I believe what fans are truly eager for is not additional DLC. They want the third part of the series to arrive as soon as possible.”
“So that’s why we’re not channeling our development resources into crafting extra episodes as DLC at the moment,” he continued. “We’re really putting all our efforts into getting the third game out quickly. For now, that’s our main focus.” That’s a pretty reasonable explanation!
The Yuffie DLC for Remake served as an effective bridge between games. Characters like Cid and Vincent Valentine might be interesting choices for solo episodes following Rebirth, but I’m not convinced what the format would bring to the table. Plus, for Vincent, there might be a chance Square Enix is eyeing a remaster of Dirge of Cerberus, similar to Crisis Core: Reunion. Let’s hope the Dirge enthusiasts out there get their wish!
Our very own Dom managed to catch up with Hamaguchi earlier this week, discussing the director’s plans for mini-games in the ultimate entry of the series. Rest assured, changes are indeed in the works.
