If you’re familiar with the British Isles, you might not immediately think of Birmingham as an ideal video game setting. But what if we rewind to the 14th century and toss in some zombies? Suddenly, it sounds intriguing. That’s the premise of “God Save Birmingham,” and after catching around eight minutes of fresh gameplay footage, it’s zoomed to the top of my anticipated zombie game list.
Typically, I gravitate towards zombie games that involve team play, endless swarms, and outrageous weaponry—titles like “Call of Duty Zombies” and “Dead Island 2” capture that chaotic essence I love. Consequently, I’ve had my eyes on “Killing Floor 3” and the elusive “John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando” as the PC games to watch. However, “God Save Birmingham” has just edged past them on my radar.
This isn’t your typical co-op zombie fest where you can wallop creatures with, say, an electrified baseball bat or vacuum them into a portable jet turbine. Earlier glimpses of gameplay hinted at its style, but the latest extended trailer from IGN paints a more vivid picture. It channels a “The Last of Us” vibe with third-person stealth and impactful takedowns. While the narrative might not hit TLOU’s emotional highs, it certainly nails the intense zombie combat.
The game also emphasizes environmental interaction. You’ll move furniture to barricade doors or use ladders to bridge gaps. Standing on chairs to reach higher ledges adds a creative twist to exploration. The realistic physics affecting you and the zombies create a sandbox ripe for experimentation.
The latest trailer dives into its robust survival mechanics. You’re managing hunger, thirst, fatigue, and panic, all visible through on-screen meters. Inventory management happens in real-time, so there’s no quick pause to munch on a loaf of bread. Injuries, like a leg strain from a fall, will slow you down. Plus, you can dismantle items for materials and whip up meals with a cooking system.
Visually, it’s impressive, and the medieval backdrop feels fresh for a zombie survival game. While there’s no release date yet for “God Save Birmingham,” an early access release seems on the horizon.
