With just a week to go before Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth hits PCs via Steam, Square Enix is amping up the excitement even more. They’ve just dropped the news that the game is officially verified for the Steam Deck, a move sure to please fans gearing up for the release.
In a show of transparency, Square Enix has put out a brief video on their official X account, showcasing the game running on a Steam Deck.
While the short clip doesn’t reveal all the details, it does suggest that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth handles well on the Steam Deck without any obvious drops in frame rate. Still, we’ll need to wait until the game officially rolls out on January 23, 2025, to see exactly how much players can push the graphics and performance on this portable device.
In another unique twist, Square Enix also unveiled a custom Chocobo-themed Steam Deck. Designed with fluffy, yellow casing and adorable feathery details, it’s a nod to the lovable giant birds that players ride for speedy travel within the Final Fantasy universe.
The video description on YouTube labels this special edition as the “Fluffy Chocobo Steam Deck.” It’s worth noting the disclaimer about not attempting to recreate a furry look for your gaming gear at home, though I can imagine die-hard fans would love to get their hands on one.
There are now just days left before Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth becomes available on PC and the Steam Deck. Square Enix recently highlighted some PC-exclusive features, like improved graphics, NVIDIA DLSS support, and DualSense controller compatibility. But for me, the highlight is gaining the freedom to play this highly anticipated entry in the storied series anytime, anywhere. My colleague, Jez Corden, seems to enjoy a similar flexibility playing the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Collection on the go with Xbox Cloud Gaming, thanks to Xbox Play Anywhere.
Looking ahead, Final Fantasy 7 enthusiasts have plenty to anticipate. Alongside the PC release, rumors are swirling about an Xbox port of Final Fantasy 7 Remake potentially landing in 2025, followed by Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in 2026.
Currently, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is available on PlayStation 5, with the Steam release set for January 23, 2025. Make sure you’re ready!
