Key Points:
The charming city builder game, Overthrown, has just released some fresh gameplay screenshots in anticipation of its early access launch. The game is set to drop on the Xbox Series X/S and PC on December 5. Also exciting for gamers subscribed to PC Game Pass or XGP Ultimate, Overthrown will be available from day one. For PlayStation fans, a PS5 version will be coming once the early access phase, which is expected to last about a year, wraps up.
Recently, Game Rant had the opportunity to offer an exclusive glimpse at Overthrown, a cozy city-builder game that boasts extensive co-op features and some intriguing spins on the classic formula. Gamers can expect it to hit both PC and Xbox platforms early in December 2024.
Developed by indie team Brimstone, known for its 2016 game, Lance A Lot, and 2018’s online shooter, Banzai Royale, Overthrown is aimed to hit the Steam Early Access and Xbox Game Preview on December 5.
Before its debut, publisher Maximum Entertainment has generously shared a batch of new screenshots. These images, which Game Rant now exclusively reveals, not only showcase Overthrown’s vibrant art style but also highlight its unique twist: this city builder primarily operates from a third-person view. While this idea isn’t exactly groundbreaking—Metropolismania dabbled with it back in 2001—it’s definitely rare enough today to help Overthrown stand out in a crowded market.
New Overthrown Gameplay Screenshots
While the bird’s-eye perspective remains a staple in city builders, Overthrown invites players into the role of a queen who’s not afraid to get her hands dirty. You’ll be in the thick of the action, whether chopping trees, constructing vital infrastructure, or fending off those pesky bandits and mutants. Adding to the excitement are traditional action-adventure elements, with the queen flashing across water and wielding weapons in a fashion that would make anime fans proud. After the excitement settles, it’s back to city management. For those who prefer to keep a classic approach, the game does include a bird’s-eye camera view as well.
According to Brimstone, Overthrown is expected to remain in early access for about a year, with the possibility of a full launch by late 2025. During this period, the developers plan to actively engage with player feedback to fine-tune the game. At launch, Overthrown will support both solo play and online co-op for up to six players. Dynamic seasons will add layers of complexity, presenting unique challenges, opportunities, and visuals.
Starting December 5, players can access the early build of this city-builder on Xbox Series X/S and PC via Steam. As part of Xbox Game Pass, it will be accessible both on PC Game Pass and Microsoft’s Ultimate tier. Due to Sony’s policies, Overthrown isn’t hitting the PS Store in the early access stage, but rest assured, it’s on the path to land on PS5 eventually.
