If you love bringing your customized Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 experience to online matches, there’s a bit of a hiccup to watch out for. Starting in December, Saber Interactive will be banning mods from public sessions. This step is being taken because of some pesky technical issues that are affecting even those who don’t meddle with mods.
Announced via a friendly Steam post by Space Marine 2’s game director, Dmitriy Grigorenko, the change comes with some reassurances. Grigorenko emphasized that the development team is not anti-mod by any stretch.
Grigorenko stated, “From the get-go, we aimed to create a game that welcomed modding enthusiasts. Our game files, for instance, aren’t encrypted to ensure accessibility. I, as a developer, am thrilled by the creativity our community can bring to the table. Mods are fantastic and certainly help in keeping the game fresh and alive.”
“However,” he added, “we need to prioritize game stability and provide a seamless experience for every player. We’ve noticed that recent server stability issues aren’t trivial and are linked to mods. This instability, unfortunately, affects even those players who steer clear of mods. We’ve also had reports of save files getting corrupted after interaction with mod-using players.”
To address these complications, the upcoming update will block access to public online sessions for players using mods. However, don’t worry, Saber has outlined that private lobbies will still welcome mods. The same goes for custom Eternal War lobbies once they’re rolled out.
The aim is to allow modders to freely enjoy their creations in a closed circle without disturbing the gameplay of those who prefer to play mod-free publicly. Ideally, this should please everyone. Although, as with all things in gaming, not everyone may share in the joy—but it’s a nice thought!
In his post, Grigorenko also promised, “We’re working on providing a simplified entry point to our backend for games with mods. This means modders won’t need to resort to tampering with the game’s executable after each update. If we unintentionally disrupt access to mods, we’ll fix it post-haste. Additionally, we’re planning to release tools to assist modders in crafting their mods more efficiently.”
It’s a pretty decent deal, ensuring that those interested in Space Moddies can keep on tinkering, albeit in more selective settings. Time to enjoy those cozy modding sessions with your crew!
