There’s been a lot of buzz lately about a possible portable Xbox device, and Asus just added fuel to the fire with a recent teaser posted on its X (formerly Twitter) account.
In the video, we see a robotic character making some tweaks on a terminal, aiming to upgrade its system. Just when it’s about to apply these changes, two devices resembling the ROG Ally X gaming console and the ROG Raikiri Pro controller crash onto the scene. Once the dust settles, the robot transforms into a gaming console that looks quite similar to Asus’s current high-end handheld offering.
What really caught everyone’s attention was the official Xbox account joining the conversation with the iconic side-eye meme. While nothing formal has come out from Microsoft’s camp, this little gesture could be hinting at Project Kennan — a handheld gaming device being developed in collaboration with Asus. This project envisions a seamless integration between Xbox and Windows into one cohesive platform.
While neither Asus nor Microsoft revealed specifics, the video offered a glimpse of what we can expect from this envisioned Xbox handheld. Promised enhancements include longer battery life, improved performance, and expanded storage, along with a fresh design for the handheld.
Asus’s teaser was strategically dropped on March 31, 2025, at 2 pm EST, likely to avoid confusion with any April Fool’s shenanigans, as tech companies tend to inundate the internet with quirky jokes during this time. If the past is any indication — remember the legit ROG Ally reveal on a previous April 1 — this Xbox console hint seems credible.
It’s worth mentioning that anticipation is also building for Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 announcement at the Nintendo Direct event on April 2. Asus’s timing might just be a strategic move to divert some attention, causing a buzz among PC gamers and handheld enthusiasts. However, it’s probably not enough to sway the hardcore Nintendo fans.
While we’re not anticipating a new Xbox console until 2027, the emergence of an Xbox handheld would be greatly welcomed by gamers. Fingers crossed that it can run Xbox games natively, rather than just being a glorified Windows 11 device with an Xbox-themed interface.
