A seasoned industry analyst suggests that if Nintendo’s Switch 2 hits the market in the first half of 2025, PS5 sales could surpass it in the United States. Mat Piscatella from Circana also predicts that due to immense demand for Nintendo’s much-anticipated next-gen console, we might see several months of supply shortages.
Can PS5 Outsell Switch 2 in the US if Supply Chains Cooperate?
Piscatella hasn’t gone into great detail on why he believes the PS5 will outperform the Switch 2 in its debut year aside from potential supply issues and a possible late 2025 release. It’s interesting to speculate whether his forecast would stand true if Nintendo experiences no hardware shortages.
Considering the PS5 is already in the latter half of its life cycle, this prediction is quite daring. However, if the much-awaited GTA 6 drops this year, we anticipate a significant spike in demand for Sony’s console.
Piscatella shared, “I project Nintendo’s next hardware will sell about 4.3 million units in the US in 2025 (assuming a first-half launch), accounting for roughly one-third of all video game console hardware units sold in that timeframe (excluding PC Portables),” as posted on Bluesky. “The number of units sold will naturally depend on manufacturing capabilities and willingness. Despite this, I still foresee the PlayStation 5 leading in overall hardware units sold in the US for the year.”
