AMD has shot down the buzz about a potential Radeon RX 9070 XT GPU featuring 32 GB of memory.
Frank Azor Sets the Record Straight on the RX 9070 XT
There have been whispers around the gaming community, fueled by a leaker on Chiphell, suggesting that AMD might be unveiling a 32 GB edition of the RX 9070 XT within the year. The chatter even went as far as to classify this hypothetical GPU as part of the ‘Gaming’ lineup, distinct from the PRO series. However, AMD’s Frank Azor has put an end to these speculations by directly responding to a post from TechPowerUp on the X platform. He made it clear that a 32 GB variant is not in the cards:
"No, the 9070 XT card is not coming in 32 GB capacity," tweeted Frank Azor on February 13, 2025.
The upcoming Radeon RX 9070 XT is slated to sport 16 GB of GDDR6 VRAM. Given its capabilities, it’s hard to imagine a 32 GB model offering noticeable improvements in gaming performance. Although the original rumor suggested this larger memory might cater to AI applications while also handling gaming, it seems that was all just talk.
Up to now, AMD hasn’t ventured into the 32 GB territory for gaming GPUs. It’s understandable, especially when considering that the 9070 XT—being in the upper-mid range—wouldn’t fully utilize such vast memory. It’s unlikely we’ll see more than 16 GB of VRAM in the RDNA 4 lineup, as the RX 9070 XT is expected to premiere as the flagship card built on the Navi 48 GPU.
Other models, like the RX 9070 or those based on the Navi 44, will carry different specs and therefore performance levels. Official unveiling of the RX 9000 series is slated for February 28th, when we’ll finally get official specs, pricing, and AMD’s performance metrics.
The GPUs are anticipated to hit the market in early March. Coincidentally, NVIDIA is also expected to release its GeForce RTX 5070 GPU around this time. In earlier statements, Azor claimed AMD’s 70-class GPUs will directly compete with NVIDIA’s equivalent tier. It will certainly be intriguing to observe how the RX 9070 XT and 9070 measure up against the RTX 5070 Ti and RX 5070 in this ongoing gaming showdown.
