Soul Paint offers a virtual reality experience that marries 3D artistry with deep self-reflection. Unveiled at SXSW 2024, this innovative project by Sarah Ticho and Niki Smit, with narration by the talented Rosario Dawson, invites participants to explore, understand, and direct their own emotions through immersive technology. In this interactive journey, you become a 3D entity within a mystical space, equipped to create art across the expanse of your virtual form.
This unique experience employs body-mapping techniques combined with virtual reality to help users delve into and become conscious of their emotions. The creators aim to cultivate empathy and a sense of connection by enabling participants to share their emotional journeys with others at the experience’s conclusion.
I had the chance to explore Soul Paint firsthand during the NewImages Festival 2025 at the XR Market. The adventure kicks off with a compelling question: “Where are you feeling?” Initially unsure, I soon found the experience to be spiritually enriching. Set in a celestial-like space, it invites a physical connection with your emotions.
The atmosphere feels soothing and contemplative, fostering a sense of self-discovery. Although my artistic skills may not win awards, the experience allowed me to express precisely what I needed at that moment. You can also sketch across your virtual body and leave a voice message at the end, offering a beautiful way to express sentiments when words fall short.
Soul Paint serves as a reflective VR mirror, providing a sense of embodiment and player agency, despite its brief and linear nature. While not the deepest experience, its thoughtful and meditative qualities are noteworthy. I look forward to more creations like this emerging.
As of now, the possibility of a home release for Soul Paint remains uncertain, but we’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available.
