Bungie’s recent reveal of early footage from their first-person extraction shooter “Marathon” set social media and Reddit abuzz with mixed reactions. Some skeptics quickly compared it to the ill-fated “Concord,” a hero shooter developed by Sony that was controversially taken offline less than a month after its launch. This prompted a former Concord developer to voice their thoughts on the Marathon subreddit, urging gamers to give the new title a fair chance.
Reflecting on Concord’s demise, the developer, who goes by the Reddit handle MrSpug, candidly shared, “Players just didn’t connect with Concord, and the message came through loud and clear. Watching our project crumble and become a target of online ridicule was heartbreaking.”
Having been part of Firewalk Studios until it was closed by Sony, this developer expressed empathy for the Bungie team, acknowledging the hard work they’ve invested in creating Marathon. They praised the developers for daring to venture into a fiercely competitive genre.
Addressing their personal experience, the developer wrote, “I poured my heart into Concord and did everything I could. We didn’t succeed, but let’s not penalize others for our missteps.”
While Concord and Marathon differ in their gameplay, both share Sony as their publisher. A major point of contention among fans from the Marathon stream was Bungie’s choice to price the game rather than going free-to-play. Like Concord, Marathon will be priced lower than typical new releases. Bungie has indicated it’ll cost less than a full-priced game, likely around $40 when it releases in September. Despite this, some worry it might meet the same fate as Concord.
The former Concord developer further commented, “I didn’t intend to be the developer seeking attention or acting like I have stakes in this. But claiming a game is doomed before it even hits the shelves really baffles me.”
In an industry where first impressions can be pivotal, it remains to be seen how Marathon will fare once it debuts. But for now, the call is clear: let the game speak for itself.
