Microsoft is gearing up to enhance Windows 11 with an update that promises to upgrade the way Task Manager handles CPU utilization monitoring. This move seems to be in line with the functionality offered by many third-party tools, which are often preferred by users for their detailed performance statistics.
With the forthcoming update, Microsoft appears to be addressing the gap between its native Task Manager and third-party utilities. Traditionally, Task Manager hasn’t quite matched the detailed analysis provided by external programs, but that’s about to change. This improvement will allow Task Manager to calculate CPU usage more effectively, adopting a method that aligns with the metrics seen in popular third-party software.
Microsoft has announced, “We are beginning to roll out a change to the way Task Manager calculates CPU utilization for the Processes, Performance, and Users pages. Task Manager will now use the standard metrics to display CPU workload consistently across all pages and align with industry standards and third-party tools.”
Although the specifics of the recalculated CPU utilization aren’t entirely clear yet, what we do know is exciting. The metrics will be consistent across different sections within Task Manager—Processes, Performance, and Users—bringing it in line with those seen on other platforms. This means users might no longer need to rely on tools like HWINFO for accurate CPU monitoring. However, we’re still awaiting the exact release date for this update.
In a thoughtful move, Microsoft is also offering flexibility for those who might prefer the current system. They’ve introduced a new optional column named ‘CPU Utility’ in the Details tab. This ensures backward compatibility remains a choice for users who find the existing method sufficient.
At present, these updates are part of the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3360, included in the 24H2 update. Users can expect a gradual rollout over time. It’s encouraging to see Microsoft taking steps to enhance the user experience by integrating features that address longstanding demands from its community.
