Sony recently rolled out its lineup of top PS5 downloads for 2024, and it’s no surprise that live service games are prominent. Though some have questioned PlayStation’s commitment to this trend, it seems the strategy is paying off. Supporting this, industry analyst Mat Piscatella has revealed the top-selling games of 2024 across all platforms, which further justifies Sony’s stance.
In an engaging post on Bluesky, Piscatella unveiled the U.S. top 20 games for 2024, ranked by sales in dollars. This list takes into account both physical copies and digital sales from the Nintendo eShop, PlayStation, Steam, and Xbox from December 30, 2023, through January 4, 2025. Here’s the list:
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
- EA Sports College Football 25
- Helldivers 2
- Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero
- NBA 2K25
- Madden NFL 25
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
- EA Sports FC 25
- Elden Ring
- EA Sports MVP Bundle
- Hogwarts Legacy
- Dragon’s Dogma 2
- WWE 2K24
- MLB: The Show 24
- Grand Theft Auto 5
- Minecraft
- Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth
- Tekken 8
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- NBA 2K24
For those who follow industry trends, many of the usual contenders appear on the list. Games like Call of Duty, NBA 2K, Grand Theft Auto 5, and EA Sports FC (known to many as FIFA) are staples in the top 20 every year. Yet, the appearance of Helldivers 2, a PlayStation live service game, is quite unexpected. Despite the mixed results from Sony’s other forays into live services, Arrowhead’s sequel has made a notable impact.
A major trend in this list is the dominance of games that incorporate live service elements. In fact, eight of the top nine best-selling games for 2024 include such features. Although not all fans are on board with Sony’s direction, the evidence suggests their decision to focus on games as a service is well-founded.
