Nintendo has just shaken things up with some major announcements about the successor to the Switch. During their latest Corporate Management Policy briefing, which followed the unveiling of the company’s Q2 2024-25 results, they officially confirmed a couple of exciting developments for their next console, whatever it ends up being called.
Firstly, they’ve committed to “full support” for existing Switch software. This means you’ll be able to play your favorite Switch games on the new device. Plus, Nintendo Switch Online services will seamlessly transition to the new system, ensuring that your online gaming experience remains uninterrupted.
Furukawa shared the news, stating, “At today’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well. Further information about the successor to Nintendo Switch, including its compatibility with Nintendo Switch, will be announced at a later date.” This was all revealed in an eye-catching Twitter post from Nintendo Co Ltd.
What remains to be seen is whether this compatibility will extend beyond digital games to include physical Switch cartridges, much like how the 3DS supported DS games with its cartridge slot. More details on this aspect are expected to be unveiled as we get closer to the new console’s release.
